ILO and its partners conducted, on 26-28 September, the Green Jobs Forum in Manado, North Sulawesi, Indonesia, to facilitate the transition towards a green and blue economy with a focus on sustainable tourism in the region.

North Sulawesi, located in the eastern part of Indonesia, is a region of immense natural beauty, rich marine biodiversity, and vibrant local communities. The ILO supports the just transition of tourism sector in North Sulawesi, Indonesia, known for its wealth of biodiversity reserve of flora and fauna, towards sustainable and inclusive tourism through social dialogues.

By fostering collaboration, knowledge sharing, and innovative approaches among stakeholders, the forum emphasized the creation of green jobs and the benefits of embracing sustainable practices in coastal and marine tourism and human-centered approaches that accelerate the development of the blue economy.

The forum was officially opened by Mr. Reza Dotulung, the Head of Economic Bureau representing the Governor of North Sulawesi province, together with Ms. Michiko Miyamoto, the Director of the ILO for Indonesia and Timor Leste, and Ms. Kusum Lata Jain, Team Lead in the Mitigation Division of UNFCCC. The forum was officially closed by Mr. Haruhiro Jono, Programme and Operations Specialist ILO/Japan Fund for Building Social Safety Nets at the ILO Regional Office for Asia and Pacific.

The forum brought together experts and technical specialists for Green Jobs and Blue Economy, policy makers, and academics from Indonesia and the region, NGOs, biodiversity organizations, and private sector. In total, 119 participants attended the three-day forum, comprising pre-event of coral adoption and mangrove planting, six thematic discussion sessions, and a visit to Budo eco-tourism coastal village and Tangkoko National Park. The forum resulted in a common commitment to conserve terrestrial and marine biodiversity of North Sulawesi through collaborative action among stakeholders and promotion of green jobs in the context of sustainable tourism.

It was held by ILO, in partnership with the Ministry of National Development Planning Bappenas, the support of the Government of Japan and the UN Partnership for Action on Green Economy (UN PAGE), and in coordination with UNEP Convention on Biodiversity (CBD) and the ASEAN Centre for Biodiversity (ACB).

Under the PAGE programme, the ILO aims to enhance the understanding of the employment impacts of the green transition and address knowledge gaps of national economies to support sustainable development and promote Green Jobs and Just Transition in the country, while enhancing peer learning through regional exchanges.

Indonesia joined PAGE in 2018. PAGE work in Indonesia is currently aligned to the following SDGs: SDG 7 (Affordable & Clean Energy); SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth); SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure), SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production); SDG 13 (Climate Action) and SDG 17 (Partnership for the Goals).

PAGE was launched in 2013 as a response to the call at Rio+20 to support countries addressing one of the greatest challenges of our time: building economies that improve human well-being and social equity, while significantly reducing environmental risks and ecological scarcities.
